INTRODUCTION:
_____________
MENU-MATE is a simple, easy to use hard drive menu system which
allows the user to easily run DOS applications. MENU-MATE completely
exits from memory when an application is run, so, therefore, occupies
none of your system's RAM while the application is being run.
The latest version of MENU-MATE can be found on The Spectrum BBS
(501) 521-5639 (SysOp - Kurtis Jones).
LICENSE INFORMATION:
____________________
MENU-MATE may be purchased in either the single user format or
the site licensed format. Users who purchase the single user version
of MENU-MATE may legally use the program on only one computer system
per purchased copy at a time. Users who purchase the site licensed
version of MENU-MATE may use the program on multiple computer systems
at that particular installation site.
The version of MENU-MATE that is distributed as shareware is the
full version of MENU-MATE, and is not limited in any way. However, you
have the option of receiving a diskette with the latest version of
MENU-MATE on it when registering your copy of MENU-MATE for an extra
$5.00. See the registration form at the end of this documentation for
more information on registering MENU-MATE.

INCLUDED FILES:
_______________
The following files should be included in the file downloaded,
or on the distribution diskette:
MENUMATE.EXE
MENUMATE.DOC
MENU.BAT
INSTALL.EXE
SUMMARY OF FUNCTIONS:
_____________________
The following is a brief summary of MENU-MATE's functions:
[F1] - Edit highlighted menu item.
[F2] - Add menu item.
[F3] - Edit menu titles.
[F4] - Delete highlighted menu item.
[Enter] - Execute highlighted menu item.
[Esc] - Exits MENU-MATE.
SETUP AND CONFIGURATION:
________________________
The files MENU.BAT and MENUMATE.EXE are needed to run MENU-MATE,
and must be placed in a sub-directory on your system's path. In
addition to the two files mentioned above, MENU-MATE will create data
files for each sub-menu that you create. The sub-menus will have a
file extension of ".DAT", and will be placed in the same sub-directory
as MENUMATE.EXE.
MENU-MATE defaults to color operation, but you can force MENU-
MATE to operate in black and white mode for monochrome monitors by
adding the switch "/m" after "menumate" in the batch file MENU.BAT.
This can also be taken care of by the installation program during
installation.
AUTOMATIC INSTALLATION:
_______________________
In order to simplify the installation process, an installation
program, INSTALL.EXE, has been included. When executed, the
installation program will prompt you for all the information necessary
to install MENU-MATE on you system, and optionally copy the required
files from a distribution disk to the sub-directory of your choice.
If the sub-directory you enter already exists, you will see the error
message - "Unable to create directory". However, the MENU-MATE
installation will continue properly, and this error can be ignored.
The installation program also asks you if you want to modify the
"PATH" command in your AUTOEXEC.BAT file to include the sub-directory
that you have specified for MENU-MATE. If you choose not to use the
M E N U - M A T E v1.1 - 2 -
installation program, you must change the batch file MENU.BAT to
reflect the sub-directory in which you have copied the MENU-MATE files
(unless they were placed in the sub-directory "C:\MENU").
NOTE:
You should always make backup copies of your AUTOEXEC.BAT file
before using the installation program
MOUSE CONVENTIONS:
__________________
MENU-MATE supports a Microsoft compatible two-button mouse, and
all MENU-MATE commands may be accessed using a mouse. MENU-MATE
commands are accessed with the mouse by positioning the mouse cursor
on the desired command in the lower portion of the screen and pressing
the left mouse button. You may make menu selections by positioning the
mouse cursor on the desired menu option and pressing the left mouse
button to highlight that item. Once a menu item is highlighted,
pressing the left mouse button again will select that particular menu
item. When editing or adding a menu item, the mouse may be used to
select different input fields by placing the mouse over the desired
field and pressing the left mouse button.
Additionally, the mouse may be used to answer "yes" or "no" at
all applicable prompts. The left mouse button represents "yes", and
the right mouse button represents "no". Generally, the left mouse
button may be used in place of the [Enter] key, and the right mouse
button may be used in place of the [Esc] key.
RUNNING MENU-MATE:
__________________
MENU-MATE is extremely simple to use. Simply follow the above
installation procedure, and re-boot your computer if any changes were
made to your AUTOEXEC.BAT file. To run MENU-MATE simply type "menu"
and press [Enter]. The first time that you run MENU-MATE, you will be
presented with a blank screen. To add your first menu item, simply
press [F2], and follow the directions under "ADDING A MENU ITEM" below.
ADDING A MENU ITEM:
___________________
To add a new menu item, press [F2], and the "ADD MENU ITEM" pop-
up window will be displayed. Move the cursor to the "Menu Display"
line and press [Enter] to enter the name of the first menu item. Once
you have entered the new menu display, press [Enter] again. If you
want the menu item to open a sub-menu, move the cursor to the "Goto
Menu" line, and enter the name of the new sub-menu that you wish to go
to. Otherwise, skip down to the "Initial Directory" line and enter the
name of the initial sub-directory for the new menu item (remembering
to press [Enter] to enter/exit the edit mode for each parameter). This
is the sub-directory that you wish to change to before executing the
new menu item. DO NOT end the sub-directory name with a back-slash
M E N U - M A T E v1.1 - 3 -
(\). You may then specify an execute path for the new menu item by
moving the cursor to the "Execute Path" line and pressing [Enter].
This line is optional, and not required if the particular program that
you wish to run with this menu item is either on your system's path,
or in the sub-directory that you specified for the initial directory.
Next, you need to enter the "Run File Name" for the new menu item.
You may also specify an extension on this line (ie: "RUN", "RUN.COM",
"RUN.EXE", and "RUN.BAT" or all acceptable). Note, however, that if
you are running a batch file from MENU-MATE, you will have to add the
command "menu" at the end of that batch file in order to return to
MENU-MATE after the program is exited. MENU-MATE will automatically
re-run after an EXE or COM file is run and exited. You may also add
additional run parameters or software switches required by the program
by entering them in the "Run Parameters" line.
After you have finished entering all of the required information
for the new menu item, press [F1] to exit and save the information.
pressing the [Esc] key will exit and ignore the new menu item
information.
EDITING A MENU ITEM:
____________________
To edit an existing menu item, press [F1], and the "EDIT MENU
ITEM" pop-up window will be displayed. Simply move the cursor to the
menu item parameter that you wish to change, and press [Enter] to edit
that parameter, and press [Enter] again to exit the edit mode. To
exit and save the new menu item information, press [F1]. To exit and
discard the new menu item information press [Esc].
EDITING MENU TITLES:
____________________
To edit the menu titles, press [F3], and a cursor will appear to
the left of the main title box. Move the cursor to the title that you
wish to edit, and press [Enter]. Once you have finished editing the
menu title, press [Enter] again, and the new title will automatically
center. To exit and save the new menu titles, press [F1]. Pressing
[Esc] exits and discards the new menu titles.
DELETING A MENU ITEM:
_____________________
To delete the highlighted menu item, press [F4]. You will then
be asked to confirm that you wish to delete the menu item. Answer by
pressing either "Y" or "N" for "YES" or "NO". If the menu item you
are deleting runs a sub-menu, then the DAT file for that sub-menu is
also deleted. However, any DAT files for sub-menus under that sub-
menu are not deleted.

EXITING MENU-MATE:
__________________
To exit MENU-MATE, press [Esc]. If you are in the main MENU-MATE
menu, MENU-MATE will exit to DOS; otherwise, MENU-MATE will exit to
main MENU-MATE menu.
